Fancy a fun event with fantastic singletrack riding, pro demo’s,
masterclasses, and guided rides for ALL abilities? Then block out April
20/21st in you diary now!
We’ve just been speaking to Pat Adams, the event supremo behind the Red
Bull 24hr and the Red Bull trail, and Dafydd Davis, the trailbuilding guru
of Coed-y-Brenin, about their planned Fat Tyre Festival. The aim of the festival is to
recreate the laid-back vibe of events like the Worlds Singlespeed
Championships and the Red Bull 24hr, as well as recalling all those rose tinted “when we all
just rode for fun” memories of summer races, but without a competitive
element. Hopefully that’ll get all those family bikes and “rode it once” bikes that are
shut away in sheds back out into the light of the fabulous Coed-y-Brenin
trails too.
So what form will this miracle take? Final details aren’t confirmed yet but
here are some tasters:
Marked and guided rides for all abilities making use of forest trails and
brand new singletrack from the MBR and Karrimor routes on the Saturday, and
then a 50km marshalled and food-stopped singletrack “challenge” on the
Sunday.
Daffyd promises 5,000 feet of climbing, and at least 50% super
technical trail (much of it brand new) with groups of twenty set off every
two minutes, so you won’t just be following wheels all day.
There will also be trailbuilding, trials, training and workshop
demonstrations from professionals such as the FE trail crew, Giant and
Halfords Trials teams, Rob Warner and the Helly Hansen / Giant race squad.
Free bike wash, a lubing service from Weldtite and loads of other trade stands
will also be there over the weekend.
Provisional prices are £5 for the Saturday events and £8 for the Sunday ride
(including food, lube, wash and medal) with reductions for younger riders
and anyone foolish enough to turn up on a tandem or singlespeed.
The whole things sounds absolutely splendid, especially without all that
nasty competitive nonsense, and we’ll certainly be pitching up to ride our
socks off.
More details, plus registration forms etc. as soon as we get them, but book that
time off now!
