British World Hour Record holder dies

Bill Paul (stoking) and Ernie Mills

Bill Paul died on Wednesday 29th January aged 92. He held the World tandem hour record with his partner Ernie Mills which they set on the Vigorelli track in Milan on a raid funded by readers of Cycling magazine in 1937.

He stayed active both on a bike and in cycling in general right up until the end and even got a couple of laps in on the back of a lo pro tandem at a recent meeting at Herne Hill when a British pair were going to try to beat his record which eventually stood for over 60 years.

As well as the world hour record Bill and Ernie Mills also smashed 20 world records and numerous British records at both short and long distances.

He will be sorely missed.
