Broadway House, promoters of the legendary Cheddar Challenge, have announced their 2003 schedule, groaning under the weight of events. In chronological order:
The Cheddar Challenge/Mud Dock Festive Burn
5th January 2003A New Year trail ride to work off excess mince pies. Social non-race ride through and over the Mendips, split into three groups for different levels of skill/fitness/enthusiasm. Start from car park opposite Broadway House at 10.30am. Free entry, 50p if you want to use the showers afterwards. Post-ride pub grub is planned. Hell of the West Enduro
26th – 27th April 2003Combined enduro/night time trial event. Teams or solo, two enduros plus the time trial. Challenging descents and technical singletrack and the full hospitality of the holiday park.
National Points Series 4X Round 1 & BMX Open
10th – 11th May 2003Bikercross racing returns to Cheddar with round one of the National 4X series. Broadway House have a brand new BMX/4X track and the weekend will also see an open BMX race. Should be one worth seeing… More information from British Cycling.
The European BMX Championships
21st – 22nd June 2003Broadway House’s new track, build by Rick Forte, is one of the premier tracks in the UK. Good enough that the BMX Euros will be held there. Broadway House promise excellent spectator facilities, and the Euro champs should make for exciting racing. More information from British Cycling.
Six Days of Cycling
13th – 18th July 2003Cycling fest for those who want to take a more a relaxed approach to their cycling. Six Days of Cycling is intended to encourage riders of all ages and styles to visit this beautiful part of Somerset for a cycling leisure break. No guided rides or group sessions, riders are completely free to explore the trails and roads surrounding Broadway House at their own pace. Route information is available from the park and guidance will be on offer from Broadway House supremo Dave Moore. Apres ride, all the park’s facilities will be available including the swimming pool, shop, bar and restaurant.
British BMX Championships
13th – 14th September 2003Following up from the European champs, the British BMX Championships will be at Broadway House too. More information from British Cycling.
Cheddar Challenge 15th Anniversary
3rd – 5th October 2003And of course, the season rounds off with the Cheddar Challenge, the longest running single event in British MTB history. The new XC-oriented approach pioneered in 2002 will be refined for 2003. “Cheddar’s focus now is on refining and improving the races for the benefit of riders and their families,” they say. The weekend will include the Cheddar Crunch two stage race, the Triple 10 Enduro three stage race, the childrens’ competition and ‘traditional’ cross country races. And the legendary Cheddar party will also be radically transformed with a “fully interactive school disco theme”. The mind boggles… More information on the Challenge nearer the time.
