Whether you actually like your riding lying down or just want to watch ‘bikes’ rather than another damned soap opera, tune in to BBC 2 at 7:30pm tonight.
‘ScienceShack’ is an Open University programme but 70’s suits and beards have been dropped in favour of Brompton riding “TV Boffin” Adam Hart-Davies. Tonight Science Shack devotes a whole programme to the science behind HPVs According to bikebiz.co.uk the programme includes an interview with the always amusingly forthright Mike Burrows and a cameo appearance by the hi tech Blue Yonder recumbent.
Unfortunately the day of filming was too windy for Blue Yonder to be ridden, but Hart-Davies does get to sit in the hotseat occupied by Olympian Jason Queally in the Human Power world championships at Battle Mountain, Nevada.
The programme also includes a (non too serious) attempt to break the world record with the aid of some intriguing device called a pop-bottle. The pop-bottle uses half-filled bottles of liquid to provide extra propulsion (sounds like cheating to us).
Anyway it promises to be the science in cycling equivalent of the whacky races and certainly sounds better than another re-run of Robot Wars anyway.
