Cowan’s Backyard Jam

Throwing down some huge style

The Jump Jam celebrated its fourth year on October 1 with 24 of the world’s best dirt jumpers competing in a friendly and fun atmosphere. On a brand new Cowan-designed multi-line course, there were stacks of big technical jumps.

After a substitution due to injury, the hometown Socal One team of Kona Clump riders John Cowan and Paul Basagoitia, along with friend Kyle Strait, took the win at the fourth annual John Cowan Backyard Jam in San Diego, California.

The Socal One team, which originally consisted of Cowan, Strait and Kurt Voreis, was forced to find a substitute after Voreis took a nasty spill that knocked him out of competition. Basagoitia was selected after a highly charged game of rock, scissors, paper, and the revised team took the event win with style.

Every rider who made the finals received $500 cash and a Giro helmet trophy stamped with a John Cowan Backyard Jam graphic. Some huge tricks were thrown at the Jump Jam, including Cam McCaul’s tailwhips, Basagoitias’ and Voreis’ 360s out of a berm, and Cowan’s barrel roll one handed x-ups.

What is the Jump Jam?

John Cowan’s Jump Jam was created in 2002 to provide riders with an event that reflects the camaraderie felt within the ranks of the sport, and the 2006 Jump Jam continued to do just that.

The event is supported by Kona. More info at www.konaeurope.com.
