A first for the Cape Epic was a mid-race time trial. A 27km loop packing 860m of climbing around Worcester, riders were set off at 30 second intervals throughout the morning, the faster pros heading out about lunchtime.
For tired riders – and that was just about everyone – it was a much-needed shorter day in the saddle and a chance to increase the rest and recovery time before the next tough three stages ahead. It also worked a treat as for the spectators there was a continuous buzz throughout the morning with riders departing and finishing in quick succession.
The course was brilliant. Skirting around the lake and through the sand dunes, the figure of eight course around the foothills of Brandwacht was a thrilling mix of fast and rocky descents, man-made singletrack and steep but short climbs, pushing riders to the limit. Add in the heat which had rocketed immediately after breakfast, and the going was fast and tough.
