One of my favourite brands to see at Eurobike every year is Fixie Inc. The German brand may only have a small stand, but they make up for their lack of real estate with some fine carpets and lovely bikes.
On show this year is the debut of their first mountain bike. The brand started out with fixed wheel street bikes before adding a disc equipped cyclo-cross bike a couple of years ago, so the addition of a mountain bike was only a matter of time.
The Twin Flame is actually two bikes. The company has taken the novel approach of using 29in wheels only on frame sizes above medium (up to XXL) and below that the wheel size switches to 26in. It goes against the growing tide of 29ers at all sizes and instead uses them based on the height of the rider.
It’s an interesting approach to adopting 29in wheels, and might be seen by some as the best evolution of mountain bikes. We’ve already got plenty of size specific components (tubesets, handlebars and so on) so why not different wheel sizes depending on the height of the rider. How it’s adopted by the mountain bike market is another thing though.
What else do you need to know? Well the frame is beautifully finished, as we’ve come to expect from the brand. The tubeset is 4130 double butted steel with details like the graceful dropouts, with the brake calliper post mounted inside the rear triangle. There’s a PressFit 30 bottom bracket, cable routing for dropper posts, and a traditional non-tapered head tube
No word on UK pricing or availability yet.
