While the BBC’s annual Sports Personality of the Year extravaganza majors on the ‘sports’ rather than the ‘personality’ (Nigel Mansell, anyone?), top online newspaper Guardian Unlimited prefers the reverse. It’s just announced the winners of the third GU Sports Personality of the Year, and they’ve got bikes…
In third place is Tyler Hamilton, fourth in the Tour de France despite riding most of it with a broken collarbone. Second is QPR manager Ian Holloway for an inspired comparison between a lucky football win and picking up women in nightclubs. And the winner? None other than Kona rider Dave Watson for his spectacular Tour de France peloton jump.
GU gets a bit carried away describing the jump (“150ft in the air above the Alpe D’Huez,” it says here) but they’ve got a nice interview with Watson.
Not seen the jump for yourself? It’s featured on the latest New World Disorder video, Ride the Lightning.Spotter: Andy Dickson
