Mavic’s Red Rock baggy shorts are a lightweight number based on the company’s featured-packed Stratos short, with fewer features actually creating a better baggy short in our opinion.
They’re well designed for the cross-country/trail mountain biker seeking a lightweight baggy short. The length is judged just right, falling right on the knee and sitting nicely above the knee when pedalling.
The polyamide fabric breathes well on hot days keeping you nice and cool, and the use of a tougher fabric on the seat and around the inner thigh area has seen them prove durable when riding through muddy and gritty winter weather, making them a versatile year-round option.
Two expandable zipped cargo pockets on the legs provide some storage capacity, but they’re not much use for anything heavier than something light like an energy bar. We’d much rather see them removed and a pair of angled hand pockets put in their place.
Fit wise, the shorts are great. The multi-panel stretch fabric gives the shorts enough flexibility to not hinder pedalling, proving extremely comfortable and non intrusive during longer rides. They do come up a little large though, I normally wear size medium shorts but found Mavic’s size small was spot on. Six sizes from XXS to XL are available.
A padded liner short is supplied with the Ergo 2D Insert comfortable for short rides, though we unclipped it – it easily removes for washing – and resorted to using a pair of favoured bib shorts underneath.
Verdict
A cracking pair of baggy shorts that have rapidly become our favourite shorts for trail riding. Lightweight, stylish, good fitting and comfortable.
