Gore Windstopper fabric, Mesh lined hand and rear pockets and draw string waist. This pimpy waistcoat comes only in black and is finely constructed from Gore’s Windstopper material throughout with a very soft fleece outer.
It’s slim-fitting enough that it will go over jerseys and under jackets easily without ruching up in all the wrong places or restricting freedom of movement, and the short stubby collar not only looks smart, but is designed not to interfere with other clothes. Higher than a jersey collar and lower than a jacket collar it sits out of the way and the little gap at the front means it won’t bunch with something over the top of it.
The mesh pockets are handy for cash and keys though we only tend to use the rear when riding so that the contents don’t bounce off your knees as you ride. The rear drawstring brings the waist in nicely to cut out draughts but it’s a bit more of a faff than some of the one-handed elastic types we’ve seen elsewhere.
The neat seams, windstopper layer, super soft to the touch outer and embroidered chest logo all raise the quality of the garment to the level where you are tempted to part with the asking price of £60 despite the fact it is not the best value for money. We’ve used it as a mid layer as well as over a jersey and on the trails its great to wear, comfortable and giving the core warmth and mobility that waistcoats are favoured for. Not much more to say really is there?.
VerdictA very fine waistcoat for the best dressed bike tart. Expensive for a wind shell with no sleeves but you do get good quality construction, stroke-ably soft finish, Gore’s 2-layer windstopper fabric and a great fit. We know the good people at freestyle are trying to source elastic drawcords to spec across their range but we’ll keep harping on about it ‘til they do. In all though great for singletrack thrashing or pre-race paddock poncing.
