Gore Bike Wear Alp-X WS RRP: £49.99
I suffer from poor circulation in my hands, no idea why, but whenever the temperature drops like it has recently, I really feel it in my fingers. I’m therefore quite picky when it comes to choosing gloves, but these Gore Bike Wear Alp-X WS gloves are good insulators.
The venerable Windstopper fabric is used in a glove that sits somewhere in the middle in terms of thickness. Freedom of movement and control of the bars and reaching the brake levers isn’t impaired all that unduly, and are probably at the upper limits of bulkiness.
Fit is excellent, with just enough space in the finger compartments and not too long at the fingertips either. That use of Windstopper means ice chilled wind can’t penetrate through to the flesh, yet breathability is good enough that they don’t sweat too much. We found them just too warm in temperatures over 10°C however, but keep them to use when it’s in single figures and you’ll be fine.
There’s a large cuff with a wide low profile Velcro closure, and a generous towel section on the thumb, and silicone coated fingers to increase grip on the levers. Turn the glove over and there’s some gel padding to protect the main nerves in the hand from impacts.
Verdict
For mostly dry weather but cold weather the Gore gloves will keep your hands warm and dry, and are packed with features that makes the high price tag a little easier to live with.
