At the end of last year we reported that Halfords had landed respected brand Voodoo Cycles for 2011 to sit alongside its current offerings.
Good new for UK riders with long memories, as Voodoo have been around in mountain biking for a long time, harking back to their inception in 1994 when Joe Murray (formerly of Kona and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame member) penned the original Wanga. Murry, we’re pleased to discover, is in fact still involved with the brand and is responsible for the current generation of bikes.
Off the back of that news, we’ve just received the £999.99 Wanga, which having just pulled it out of the huge box in which it arrived in, looks the business. At its heart is a 7005 double butted aluminium frame along with a tapered head tube to beef up the front and bring it right on trend, with a 140mm RockShox Revelation RL fork, complete with a 15mm thru-axle, planted into the front end.
The rest of the specification is right on the money for the sub-grand asking price, featuring Shimano’s excellent and very nearly faultless Deore XT with a triple chainset providing a 30-speed transmission. Avid Elixir R hydraulic brakes bring you to a speedy halt and Maxxis Minion DHF and DHR 2.25in tyres provide stacks of traction with their Super Sticky tread compound.
Something which will potentially appeal to some readers is the sliding dropouts, which means you could, quite easily, dump all the gears and run it as a singlespeed.
The range of bikes is now available in Halfords 400 stores. The Wanga pictured costs £999.99, which we’ll be dragging to a trail in the very nearby future – we’ll let you know how we get on.
