Nuun hydration tablets £6
Nuun first appeared ten years ago, and this year they celebrated with the launch of five new flavours, taking their electrolyte tablet range up to 11.
The idea behind Nuun is simple: to replace the electrolytes and other vitamins you lose though the process of sweating. They’re low in calories, just six per tablet, sugar free with no carbohydrates to speak of.
Perhaps the best way I found to use Nuun is to use food like gels, bananas and energy bars to get fulfill carbohydrate requirements while the Nuun tablets take care of hydration demands, as a tasty alternative to plain water.
It’s commonly said that replacing your lost electrolytes is important to avoid cramp. Of course, there are plenty of variables which can induce cramp – for instance, diet or the intensity of the ride – there’s currently no scientific data concluding that lost low sodium levels are the culprit for cramp.
Water tastes a bit bland though and here, with a range of 11 flavours, Nuun makes it easier to drink more, because they taste so good, you find yourself sipping constantly. And drinking frequently is the key to staying properly hydrated.
Each compact tube is packed with 12 tablets, one being enough for a typical 500ml bottle. The tubes compact dimensions make them ideal for taking on a long ride with you, as they take up little space in a pocket or hydration pack. And they’re preferable to messing about with sachets of powder, where more often than not the wind picks up and the powder goes everywhere but in your bottle!
Each tube costs £6 and contains 12 tablets.
Verdict
We tested each of the new flavours and found them all easy on the taste buds. They’re not too strong, mostly mildly strong so they’re refreshing and easy going. The Tropical flavour has fast become my personal favourite.
