With a name like the Pacifier you’d expect good performance and the Adventure Nitelights 1600 Pacifier doesn’t disappoint. Huge brightness, a broad beam pattern and long battery life combined with a reasonable price make this a good choice for first timers or more experienced night riders.
The 1600 Pacifier is the brightest of three lights offered by New Zealand-based Adventure Nitelights. A stonking 1600 lumens is produced by four small Cree XPG R5 LEDs arranged in a chunky and very industrial looking lamp unit that looks large compared to some of the more compact lights we’ve tested recently.
Powering the LEDs is a 5000 mAh Li Ion battery housed in a fabric bag, with two velcro straps to attach it to the top tube. This four cell battery gives a battery life of between two and six hours and our testing found that it did indeed deliver two hours on the highest setting.
Switch the light on and it powers up in the brightest of three modes, giving the full 1600 lumens. Another press of the rubber button on the rear of the lamp cycles into a lower setting, and another press gives you a flashing mode. A (very) long press turns it off.
If you want a high-powered light for trail riding and it needs to double up for commuting, then this combination of light modes is a smart offering. The on/off button also acts as a battery level indicator: it’s green when the battery is full, and changes to blue, orange and then red as you burn through the battery charge.
Included in the box is everything you need for mounting it to the handlebars, helmet or even your head. The light uses a simple thick rubber band to fix to the handlebars, with the curved underside of the lights bracket ensuring a snug fit. Like most clamps that rely on a rubber band, it’s not as stable as we would like, even on a 31.8mm bar. A little wedge of old inner tube around the bar worked a treat and kept it reasonably stable.
It’s light enough to be used as a helmet light and the velcro mount, though fiddly to set up, does offer the choice. Whether you mount such a powerful light on the handlebars or helmet is down to personal preference, but the Pacifier is nearly bright enough that for all but racing and very fast technical night riding you could just run this light on its own mounted to the helmet.
The beam pattern is a broad shape with a good spread of brightness from the centre away to the edges. With the lamp mounted on the handlebars it’s a little wider than it is long, and so lacks reach when you increase the speed and the trail narrows. Drop the speed though and on less technical trails there’s plenty of brightness for making night riding a fun and enjoyable experience.
Verdict
A decent light that is well designed and offers a practical, broad spread of powerful light for a reasonable price.
