Science in Sport launch Smart-1 energy drink

We sampled Smart-1 at its launch on Thursday – and gave the berry flavour the thumbs up

Science in Sport have launched the Smart-1 caffeine-based energy drink, formulated to increase performance at the ‘business end’ of long-distance events.

The berry-flavoured drink – which we sampled at the launch at Madison’s iceBike trade show – builds upon SiS’ existing Smart-1 energy gels and adds caffeine stimulation to carbohydrate energy for added focus and drive, while electrolytes promote hydration during and after exercise.

It retails at £10.00 for a 500g tub and £1.25 for a 45g sachet.

But SiS director Tim Lawson warned that riders must use Smart-1 – like any caffeine product – correctly in order to reap the maximum benefits.

“Users of SiS products need to be aware that while caffeine can have great benefits on athletic performance, it should be used in the correct manner,” said Lawson.

“The co-administration of caffeine and carbohydrate is a driver in carbohydrate metabolism, giving athletes a timely boost over short distances and at the ‘business end’ of longer events, such as stages races.

“As caffeine can accelerate glycogen depletion if used too early in long events, we would recommend consumers follow the professionals’ leads and use the product for short events and at the final stages of long-distance events, giving them the energy to blast towards the finish line or dominate a difficult hill climb.”

He added: “We regularly get requests from both professional athletes and consumers for new products and flavours, and the Smart-1 enegy drink is one such request that we’ve managed to include in the range.

“After trialling the product with the highly successful Rabobank team, we believe combing the benefits of high-class caffeine and carbohydrate energy product with the added benefits of an electrolyte-fuelled hydration boost will be extremely successful.”

We’ll be testing some of the new energy product over the following weeks and will let you know how we get on.
