If your riding demands that you pad up, then a normal XC jersey most likely won’t do the job. A jersey which is looser fitting with a more generous cut is necessary and this is precisely what Fox’s new Strafer short sleeve jersey offers.
Fox have a highly established reputation in supplying clothing to the DH/Freeride set, and their styling has always proved popular. The Strafer indeed looks good, but is also well designed and packs in some handy features.
The fit of the jersey is on the generous side, and feels very light and airy when not wearing padding, the polyester Pique material feels thin and on the bike is very light and airy. Padded up, the loose fit still allows a great deal of movement and you never feel restricted. The neck shape is comfortable and unrestrictive, and the back drops down several inches.
If you’ve ever been out riding in the heat and wearing some sort of eyewear, you’ll know the problems with using a sweaty jersey to wipe the lenses. Usually you’ll only succeed at making the problem worse, so the guys at Fox have attached a small patch of soft, ‘no smear’ material hidden underneath the front right side of the jersey. Despite getting hot and sweaty, the patch manages to remain perfect for wiping clean your eyewear.
Positives: Looks great, good fit, eyewear wipe is extremely useful
Negatives: We’ve managed to stain the white areas with mud, but that may be down to the brand of washing detergent we’re using
Verdict
Even if you’re not akin to strapping on pads before a ride, and prefer a baggy jersey, the Strafer is great jersey. The cut is very comfortable, and the concealed eyewear wipe is something we’d love to see featured on all our jerseys.
