Alpina Mythos helmet £74.95
At £75 the Alpina Mythos helmet is well placed for those looking for a cross-country/trail riding helmet with decent weight, ventilation and comfort .
German company Alpina isn’t that well known in the UK, but produce a wide range of helmets with prices stretching from £45 right up to their lightest at £140. The Mythos is a good introduction to the range with a price that looks about right for the features on offer.
The fit of the helmet is excellent, the turn dial is ergonomic to use (easily on the move) for adjusting the retention system. The chin strap uses a novel ratchet that is unlike anything we’ve seen before. It offers easy fitment though and there’s enough adjustment to get it just right. A push button releases the strap. It’s a little more complicated and arguably heavier than a typical buckle affair, but is a different solution that works nicely.
25 large vents take care of ventilation when the temperature increases, scooping in air efficiently over the head. The antibacterial pads are well placed and handled sweat well, and the fly net is a nice addition for keeping unwelcome visitors out.
The Mythos isn’t striking out to be the lightest helmet in the world but tipping the scales at 263g it’s pretty reasonable, giving a good weight-to-price ratio that beats many other helmets at this price.
Verdict
Despite the bold colour scheme of our test helmet (other colours are available) we really warmed to the Mythos. It’s very light and stupendously comfortable, bordering on the most comfortable we’ve ever tested. A worthwhile consideration if you’re in the market for a new helmet.
