5000 cyclists take part in London Sky Ride

Mayor of London’s transport advisor, Kulveer Ranger (4th L), Olympic BMX cyclist, Liam Phillips (3rd L) and Team Sky’s road riders Thomas Lofkvist, Chris Froome, Lars Petter Nordhaug and Michael Barry, joined thousands of participants at the Mayor of London’s Sky Ride Redbridge

An estimated 5,000 people joined Olympic BMX rider Liam Phillips, the Mayor of London’s transport adviser, Kulveer Ranger, to enjoy a day of cycling and entertainment on traffic free streets at the Mayor of London’s Sky Ride Redbridge over the weekend.

Riders at the free event, organised by the Mayor of London, Sky, British Cycling and Redbridge Council,  cycled the 13.5km route passing Fairlop Waters Country Park, Redbridge’s popular Dick Turpin restaurant and an impressive range of bike-based entertainment with everything from massages for tired cyclists to bikes being used to make music.

This was the second of three Mayor of London Sky Rides events taking place this summer with the Mayor of London’s Sky Ride due to take place in central London on Sunday 5 September.

The events are part of a series of initiatives in London during what the Mayor has dubbed London’s ‘Year of Cycling’, including the delivery of the Mayor’s landmark cycle superhighways and the Mayor’s flag ship Barclay’s cycle hire scheme.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “It is heartening to hear of thousands of cyclists taking the opportunity to hop on their bikes and traverse through Redbridge on two-wheels – simply the best way to travel and see their borough. These events are all part of the cycling revolution which we are working hard to bring to all corners of London.”

Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor’s transport adviser, added: “I had a superb time seeing thousands of people cycling through Redbridge. The atmosphere was fantastic with the whole community coming together to take part. These events show us how important it is to get people from all areas of London onto two wheels.”

Olympic BMX rider Liam Phillips said: “It was great to take part in the Mayor of London’s Sky Ride Redbridge today and see so many people of all ages and abilities cycling around the traffic-free streets of Redbridge and enjoying the great entertainment on offer. I hope today will have reminded people how fun cycling is and how easy it is to get back on your bike.”
