The first year of the South West’s new mountain bike race series has been a good one. Rider’s can reflect upon some amazing tracks, some close fought XC action and, for those with less of a competitive streak, some great Enduro events. We’ve welcomed old faces back and got a fair few new faces into the riding and racing scene.
But the season is not over, there is still one event to go and the team at Shred Events have saved the best for last. With the infamous Newnham 60 Enduro off the menu this year, this event will be a final opportunity for the many riders in the South West of the UK to come together and enjoy an awesome weekend of riding.
The weekend of September 3rd/4th will see riders from right across the region converge on Combe Sydenham country estate for a weekend of fat tyre action. Kicking off at 10am on Saturday with a 1hr and 2hr enduro event on the XC circuit.
The XC riders are then shaved, polished and lined up for the XC race, not just any XC race but the South West Championships – which kicks off at 1pm. We’ll be joined by the men and women in uniform as the event also plays host to the inter-services championships, the annual skull smashing between the Army, Navy and RAF.
Once the dirty business of crowning some champions is done we’ll move onto more relaxed affairs with a fun evening downhill event, a sleepover at the nearby campsite, before rising to ride the Mega Enduro on Sunday.
The Mega Enduro is a massive lap of the Somerset countryside fringing the Quantocks and taking in elements of the legendary Combe Sydenham DH track along the way. At around 60km the loop should be enough to challenge any rider and if you fancy your chances at smashing an amazing time then there’s a winner jersey on offer for the fastest man and woman to complete the full distance.
