22/23 April.
Killeen Shines In Wet Wales
National Mountain Bike Manager, Simon Burney reports from a sodden South
Wales on Team Y2K’s progress. Highlight of the weekend was a fine ride by
Britain’s top junior, Liam Killeen.
“It was a tough day of racing in very muddy conditions for all riders. The
Team Y2K *(see note below) riders plus four Elite-Affiliates to the World
Class Performance Programme had just completed a very hard week of training
in preparation for the next World Cup races, which come together over the
next three weeks. Consequently, this race was not targeted for a
particularly high performance.”
“The Elite Affiliates Craig, Clarke, Lasenby, and Beckingsale were head &
shoulders above the rest of the riders, which shows their current fitness
level & ability. In contrast, the three U23 riders were all very tired so
Phil Dixon’s performance was encouraging. Ian Wilkinson flatted and Tim
Morley was content to finish the race competitively after four weeks off
with a broken shoulder. Alison Whitely (Physio) has worked well with Tim to
“repair” him quickly & Gary Foord has tailored turbo sessions for him to do
whilst off the road. Liam Killeen was impressive with a clear win in Junior
race; he had a 1min 45sec lead after the first 23 minute lap!! After two
laps he had 2mins 30secs and after 3 laps, over three minutes.”
“It was also good to see the team becoming a focus for spectators. This was
the first time all the Y2K Team had competed together in UK, and in their
new strip. Race commentators were regularly talking about the team,
especially Ian Wilkinson’s recent successes. As a final note, Caroline
Alexander did not compete. Her first race after injury will be World Cup in
Houffalize, Belgium next weekend.”
Killeen’s Quote
Most of the Y2K riders’ comments were unprintable due to the conditions.
However, Liam Killeen did manage to shake off the water long enough to say
this:
” It was a good workout and I felt strong; I pulled a muscle in my calf on
Thursday doing some interval training but had some treatment at the hotel
from Alison Whitely (Physio) last night and it was fine during the race
although it was sore afterwards. Alison treated it again after & we are
confident it will clear up in time for Houffalize, which is my first big
target of the season, in preparation for the Worlds”.
Elite Men and Women
In the men’s race it was good to see Nick Craig back on form after his
recent injury problems. He was pushed all the way by Barrie Clarke. Paul
Lasenby and Oli Beckingsale confirmed their good form as the “big four”
underlined their status as the only real contenders for Olympic places. With
places to be decided by performances in the first five World Cup races, the
next few weeks should produce some interesting races within races as the
World Cup resumes.
In the absence of Caroline Alexander, Louise Robinson took the opportunity
to prove that she too is a serious contender for an Olympic place with a
fine win. Following her silver at the Cyclo-Cross worlds, she has been in
good form throughout the spring. Tracy Brunger took a distant second place
ahead of Helly Hanson duo Sadie Parker and Rachel Pickett.
Notes
* Team Y2K is the domestic team for riders who are part of the Lottery
sponsored World Class Performance Programme (WCPP), and who ride
internationally for Great Britain. The WCPP is focused on improving
performances at World and Olympic level. In addition to the Y2K team
members, several Elite riders who are currently contracted to pro-teams are
also training with the team. These riders are known as Elite Affiliates to
the World Class Performance Programme.
