Lightweight Tactel construction, elasticated waist, Scotchlite tape on rear. These lightweight baggy shorts come with a fleecy insert and are best worn over light summer shorts. The tactel material shrugs off mud and water to some extent and is hard wearing and quick drying. The cut is generous but they aren’t so baggy they hook up on the saddle or catch on things like seat QRs. There’s a reflective strip across the rear that will add a little visibility and the elasticated waist can be pulled in further with the drawstring.
The Airstream shorts are smart looking for their simplicity and don’t restrict movement on the bike. The pockets are handy off the bike but get in the way if filled on the bike and during really heavy downpours they ca retain water and the material will wet out so put your fiver elsewhere if it looks like rain.
VerdictIn all there’s not much to go wrong and the important things like fit and comfort are fine. The airstreams are best suited to warm days when the trail might be wet but the skies are clear. They offer some protection against wheel spray and aggressive vegetation but are light and cut well enough to ride in as hard as you would normally. Price is around what you’d expect.
