Reluctantly, the organisers of the Singlespeed European Championships have been forced to cancel the event due to insignificant/insufficient (delete as applicable) entries. Last week’s last-ditch call to arms, failed to mobilise sufficient singlespeeders to make the event financially viable. According to organiser, Michael Wilkens it wasn’t just UK riders who failed to show enough interest: “Unfortunately, the lack of entries shows that the singlespeed scene in Germany is not willing, or not strong enough, to support an event with a happening character that steps away of the mainstream of cross-country and marathon racing”.
Press and industry support was plentiful, and there was a great deal of interest generated through forums in the UK and Germany, but the singlespeed solidarity and cold, hard entries just didn’t materialise.
Anyone who has entered the event will get their entry fee refunded in full, and anyone who has paid but not entered should contact [email protected] to arrange a transfer.
The organisers would like to say a big thanks to everyone who believed in this event, and to all their industry supporters, including: Surly, PowerBar, Big Pack, RockShox, CicloSport and Todtnau MTB-Fun-Park who stayed with them until the very end.
