The Great Britain team has had a spectacular time at the World Track Championships in Copenhagen. It all started with Chris Hoy’s Gold in the Kilometre. Then following day he led the Team Sprint team to another gold in the second fastest time ever recorded – 750m in 44.370 seconds. The team of Chris Hoy, Craig McLean and BMX racer Jamie Staff (taking part in his first Track World Championships) beat the Commonwealth Gold medallists Australia by 0.138 seconds.
Then, on the last day of the Championships (and on his birthday). Chris Newton convincingly won the World Championship for the Points race. He dominated the men’s 30 kilometre race, taking three laps on the field. It rounds off an impressive year for Newton, in which he took a Commonwealth Games silver in the Team Pursuit and a bronze in the Points race, plus on the road he won the Tour de la Manche stage race and was second overall in the Irish Milk Ras.
Other strong Brit performances included the Team Pursuit team’s bronze, a fourth for Emma Davies in the Womens’ Pursuit and Victoria Pendleton qualifying for the Women’s Sprint.
