As we reported a while back, local opposition to mountain bikers in the Llanberis area gave rise to the threat of an outright MTB ban on Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales and something of a classic MTB ride. There are already voluntary access restrictions in place on Snowdon to relieve pressure and reduce conflicts on the heavily-used trails, but local residents complained that the restrictions were being ignored and that riders were effectively using the Snowdon bridleways as a DH course.
As reported on MTB-Wales.com, however, the Local Access Forum for Snowdon has met and agreed that a ban was premature. The plan now is to promote and publicise the voluntary access agreements an a code of conduct. The tale isn’t over yet, though, with Gwynedd Council leaving open to possibility of introducing a bye-law or Traffic Regulation Order if bikers don’t play ball.
