A story in today’s Guardian describes how a British mountain biker became disoriented in the mountains near Tahoma, California and went missing for 18 hours.
Getting lost in California doesn’t sound too harsh, but don’t be fooled – temperatures in the mountains dropped to -6 degrees C as Peter Street shivered in a shelter he’d made from tree branches.
Eli Okrent, of the Placer County Sheriff’s Department, is reported aas saying: “He didn’t have any proper equipment with him. He is lucky he had the skills to build the shelter and that he knew to stay put. That did help him out.”
