Mavic‘s not-yet-released Crossmax SL wheels have had to be modified due to a weak point found in the front hub flange. It’s not a recall as such as the wheels aren’t on sale yet, so don’t worry, yours aren’t about to fall to bits.
The new Crossmax SL front hub is a three-piece unit made from two different materials. Mavic’s prototype testing showed that it was as strong and rigid as the previous one-piece hub and fulfilled all their duration testing criteria.
Prototypes are one thing, though, and production is another. Shortly after starting full-scale production they discovered a weak point in the hub flanges due to material problems. It appears that Mavic can’t get consistent enough quality in the alloy they’re using in the flanges, so they’ll need to redesign the hub. That would mean a long wait for the wheels to appear, so in the meantime they’ll be releasing the wheels with their existing one-piece hub.
Apparently that’ll take the Crossmax SL front wheel from a feathery 650g to a nearly-as-feathery 680g. We think we could live with that…
