It’s probably quite rare that you would get the chance to go back to where your passion was first born.
Mick Hannah, Holly Feniak and Fabien ‘Cous Cous’ Cousinié got to do just that when they took a ride around Fairfax, California. The trail in the video is the where the first ever downhill races took place and it’s rather strange to think that by today’s standard it’s no tougher than a fire road.
The hills around Marin were where riders such as Gary Fisher started to carve out the history of mountain biking, in races organised by his roommate at the time Charlie Kelly. The name ‘Repack’ came from how the rear hub brake used to need constant repair after each run – I doubt we’d have the same number of mountain bikers around today if this was still the case!
In the video the guys even go back to the roots and get the clunkers out for a few slides around some dusty corners. There’s all the info on this trail in this Wiki article and it’s great to see this mixture of old and new.
Plus we also get to check out some footage of Polygon’s newest range of trail bikes being ridden. I got to have a closer look at the range at last year’s Eurobike, but unfortunately can’t let you know how they ride. But I’m guessing you’ll be able to ride as fast as Sik Mick if you get one….or so we are lead to believe.
Anyway, sit back and enjoy some people having fun on bikes. Now how do I escape this office…
