Six of the best: Winter cycling boots

Your guide to winter cycling boots

Gaerne Polar £169.99

There are many ways of keeping your feet warm and dry during the winter, but our favourite time-tested approach is a pair of winter boots. Designed to be impenetrable to the frequent puddles and river crossings on trails at this time of year with a waterproof liner and none of the ventilation panels that populate a typical summer shoe, all meaning you’ll still have dry toes at the end of a ride.

Here’s six of the best currently available.

Gaerne Polar £169.99

The mighty Gaerne Polar looks like the kind of boot you could trek to the North Pole in. Gaerne says “it’s been designed for extreme inclement cycling conditions” and to that end uses a triple Velcro closure system with a tall thermal ankle collar with its own Velcro fastener. A Thinsulate and Pile interior keeps the feet warm.

The removeable insole is thermo-formed for a better fit and the heel cup ensures good stability when pedaling. For those brief periods when the only option is to dismount and push/carry the bike, a high abrasion and wear resistant sole offers high levels of grip and mud shedding capabilities bolstered by a pair of stud mounts at the front.
