This weekend hosted not only the second round of the
WorldCup but also the equally important second round of the SAMS series. That is
probably as far as the similarities go though. The course in Cortina, Italy, boasts
a 320 m vertical drop to the finish line, unfortuantely for all racing at the SAMS
I would be surprised if the Erlestoke course could muster a 32 m drop. The course
started in the woods above the arena with a little start ramp to help you get away
before a long sprint into the woods. The woods provided some interest, as rutted
berms and slippery roots did their best to get you off the bike. The steepest (and
most interesting) part of the course was two drop offs in line, which was a pleasant
change form the highly pedally course. Out of the woods a nasty (if nigh on flat
right hander) had a few people off, before sprinting down to the finish line, passing
on the way two small ripples which vaguely resembled a set of doubles.
As you may have noticed I was not that impressed with the course. The poor weather
conditions certainly didnt help much, it rained from the start of the Sprot Men right
through till the end, meaning that the fastest time of the day was Dan Atherton riding
in the Juniors. Lewis King (Giant) took the Elite first place with a Time of 1:20:07.
Full podium results are listed below.
There are no photos Im afraid as the course was just too uninspiring. It is a shame
that they couldn’t find/be bothered to find a better course. I think alot of riders
will be put off riding more SAMS events this season.
