TransWales 2008

TransWales is back for 2008. After the inaugural seven-day stage race in 2006, the TransUK team headed up to Scotland for their 2007 extravaganza. And for next year, it’s back to Wales on a fresh course.

The format – long, enduro-style, non-competitive linking stages sandwiching shorter, timed, “special stages” that decide the winners – is largely unchanged, although there’s a possibility of timed stages embedded into linking stages on occasion, which would add a certain something. TransWales course designer John Lloyd has been exercising his detailed knowledge of the huge empty bits in the middle of Wales to come up with the mighty 550km (344 mile) course, including 15,500m (50,840ft) of climbing.

Starting from White House Farm, Builth Wells on 16 August 2008, the riders (in teams of two or solo) will embark on a grand tour of Wales, visiting purpose-built trails at Cwmrhaedr, Brechfa Forest, Corris and Nant yr Arian. As in 2006, one of the timed stages will be a night stage.

You’ll only need day-ride kit on the bike, with the bulk of your gear being transported between overnight stops by truck. Given the logistical challenges of these events, entry is strictly limited to 300 riders, so it’s a good idea to get in quick.

Entry forms are now available at www.mtbtransuk.co.uk/wales/, where you can also find kit lists, a FAQ and of course the stage breakdown of the new course.
