The winter series of Trailbreak’s popular Fat Tyre off-road orienteering events kick off on Sunday October 14th with BIKEmagic as a main sponsor. There are ten events, eight Sundays and two evenings, between now and May 2002.
Competing in a Fat Tyre challenge you’ll be given a map and the coordinates of the various checkpoints at registration. Mark your map up and work out your route before setting off. Once on the bike the clock starts ticking. Sunday events run a three and a half hour check-point-bagging format with time penalties for those who over-run the allocated time. The evening challenges will be run over two hours, starting and finishing at pubs.
The are prizes for each event and across the whole series. If you’re thinking of competing across the whole series it’s worth noting that your top five results count. Whereas the worst five results may well end up winning you BM merchandising. The person with the most time penalty points at each event gets a BIKEmagic cap.
Obviously you’ll need bike lights, and a headlamp or torch for map checking is also a good idea if you’re doing the evening rides as start times run as late as 8pm, final registration 7.45pm.
