Clapham Common will host the eighth Sprite Urban Games this summer, combining action sports and “the hottest urban and rock music around”. The organisers are expecting 20,000 people to show up, and we wouldn’t be at all surprised – they’re lining up street, vert, dirt and flatland demos and comps, with top BMXers like Ryan Nyquist and Colin MacKay lining up to show what they’re made of. There’ll also be skate action and all sorts of other bits and bobs.
A new thing will be the public street course, so anyone can have a go. For the pros there’ll be £40,000 in prize money up for grabs, plus a special competition for 12-16 year olds. Then of course there are numerous other attractions including, but not limited to, the B-Boy arena (“…the chance to see the crews battle, lock and pop their way to one of the top titles in the UK”), retail stands and two (count ’em) fully licensed bars.
Sounds like a good day out. The ticket hotline is 0870 380 0136 or have a gander at www.spriteurbangames.com.
