Sheffield paramedics are experimenting with bikes as the best way to get to the scene of an accident more quickly, reports the Sheffield Telegraph. Paramedic John Alexander and his team are using converted Marin Nail Trail hardtails with a range of accessories that you won’t find in most bike shops but, thinking about it, wouldn’t half be handy in a race – flashing blue lights, sirens, oxygen cylinders, defibrillators…
The idea is that the bikes will be able to negotiate crowded streets and busy traffic more quickly than a conventional ambulance, allowing the bike-borne paramedics to assess and begin to treat casualties earlier. It’s a four-month pilot scheme by Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
