This is the nearly-complete Wheelbase track. In case you can’t quite work out what you’re looking at, Wheelbase is Britain’s first permanent indoor BSX/BMX track and trails and is therefore a very timely development.
It’s the work of Sheffield Dirt Society, with help from British Cycling, expert trackbuilders TGN Construction and a lot of volunteers. The official opening is this Sunday, 12 December at 11am. You’ll need to join SDS to ride – annual memberships are £15 for under-16s, £20 for adults or £40 for a family membership (adult and two children). All annual memberships include a free first session, otherwise it’s £3.50 or a fiver depending on age for at least two and a half hours of track time. If you’re just passing through, you can get a day membership and ride session for £10.
To celebrate the opening of the track, SDS will be holding the Christmas Classic the following weekend (18/19 December). Registration will be 12 noon until 5pm on the Saturday (£10 under 16s, £12 over 16s). Gate practice will run from 1pm until 5pm, then it’s a King of Dirt jump comp between 5 and 6 before BMX and 4X racing from 6pm. On Sunday you’ve got an hour’s practice from 9 until 10 and then racing from 10.30am.
If you’re a shop/manufacturer/industry type there’s some space for EZ-Ups and the like – contact SDS to make a booking. SDS is also looking for various other bits of help, support and especially sponsorship, so if you’ve got anything to offer, give ’em a call.
