British rider Sam Reynolds produced a spectacular final run to win the sixth Monster Energy White Style in Leogang, Austria.
Reynolds topped a near-perfect first run with a second performance that saw the Polygon rider nail a perfect double backflip -the first ever landed in White Style history.
“Unbelievable,” said the Polygon rider. “I just dropped in and took my ride and then I thought, ok let’s kick the double back! When I landed I already knew it was enough for some of the first places. But to leave Leogang as winner is quite a little winter dream for me.”
The course was built by Kona rider Grant ‘Chopper’ Fielder and, in perfect snow conditions, Chopper didn’t scrimp on airtime. More than two tons of snow – his building material of choice – left enough room for the 18 riders to pull off gigantic tricks. Sam Pilgrim, winner in 2010 and 2011, made it clear in his qualifying run that he was on top of his game and ready to complete his White Style hat-trick – but the Brit crashed at the first obstacle in his second final run to fall out of contention for the the podium places.
Martin Söderström (Specialized) took second, while Antoine Bizet (Kona) completed the podium. French rider Bizet broke his collar bone at last year’s event but showed no fear with a daring first run, including flatspins, flip nohands, flip drops and was leading the competition for a long time.
But he was displaced by Reynolds’ masterpiece, while Swedish giant Söderström moved into second with the most technical run of the day, throwing down huge trick after huge trick, with a 360-tailwhip out of the start igloo, followed by a flip-whip, then a nollie to bar spin, flip up the Monster Ship, 360 off the big drop and finished with a perfectly executed double tailwhip.
