I
have had my AIR-O since the end of July, when even some of the magazines hadn’t heard
of it! The spec is Shimano XT throughout, a good groupset, but i was a Gripshift
ESP convert. Fortunately the old Rapidfire instant reactions came back to me and
I realised just how good it was. I changed the fork for a Z1 BAM, because i prefer
the silky smooth action. Some magazines have branded this fork as a bit flexy compared
to the X-VERT but i find it hard to detect any flex in either, so I went for the
strength, looks and action of the Bomber. The finishing kit is all top notch Orange
own brand stuff and suited the bike perfectly. The rims are the new Orange DH Team
rims (made by Alex). It comes with flatties and is ready to rock from the shop, but
of course coming as a frame only option the spec can be dialled to however you want
it.
The frame itself is a tubular affair with gussets galore, though these are of the
tasteful variety, unlike those of the Planet X. The plate gussets at the head tube
asure triple clamp compatability and give a good platform for stickers. The rear
end is identicle to the Missile and so is stiff and very, very strong.
The ride is truly impressive. The accelleration is breathtaking, it is hard work
to keep hold of it as you experience the high g-forces that occur as you get going.
The ride is lively and enjoyable. It is extremely stable in the corners and during
air time.
I had to change the excellent Orange saddle for a BEEFCAKE stylie Tioga XL, just
to do the bike justice. It is a good thing that it comes with the super powerful
XT stoppers because you need that kind of power when you reach the speeds you can
on the AIR-O.
Frame:£350-400
