Glyn Rhonwy, Llanberis is just up the road from Coed-y-Brenin – the birthplace for the recent expansion of man-made trails – and is the latest site being put forward for development into a MTB centre. Local community company Beicio Llanberis Cyf is hosting a meeting on 23 March at 7pm where they’ll show their plans for the site to the local community, and they’re urging local MTBers to show their support.
Vice Chair for Beicio Llanberis Cyf, Guto Wyn, says about the meeting: ‘This will be our first real opportunity to talk to the local community about our proposals to develop Glyn Rhonwy into an all-year round recreational mountain biking facility. Beicio Llanberis Cyf is formed of people who live and work in this community and at the end of the day we want what is best for our area. So the sooner the wider-community know of our plans and have some input and ownership the better.’
So what exactly are these plans then? They’ve got a 200 acre site at their disposal, with a handy 300m height drop from highest to lowest point, so there’s potential for a DH and 4X course as well as a XC course. The site is a disused quarry, and as such would be the first non-forested welsh centre. As well as catering for those skilled in the art of piloting a bike, they’re going to ensure the area is open to novices, with courses run by local instructors. There’s even talk of the potential to host races and events…
This development would obviously have financial benefits for the local economy. Alun Hughes, Beicio Llanberis Cyf chairman expands upon: ‘The decision could have a significant impact on the people who live and work here, so we want everyone to have this opportunity to find out more about what we are proposing and ask as many questions as they want.’
