After a massive ten-year gap, nocturne racing will make its long and overdue return to Britain. Newport, Shropshire, is the location for two night races which will be held on September the 15th and prize money has been set at a staggering £2000, with the winner of the elite race taking home his weight in beer.
The town held the national men’s road race from 1986-89 and until 1991 night races had attracted over 10000 spectators. This year there’s been an injection of £5000 from the council and generous support from local businesses. The money has contributed to 18 industrial size lighting units and a live jazz band that will add to the attractions.
Before the elite race kicks off there will be a “Revenge Match” contested between some of Britain’s greatest riders. Sid Barras , Keith Lambert and Les West head the bill. Pru Tour stage winner Julian Winn is the main contender for the elite race, that also includes Simon Cope and local riders Mike Jones and John Stollery.
The evening promises to be one of excitement and entries do not close for a further two weeks. Organisers, Michael and Nick Jeggo can be contacted on 01952 810964.
