The Nevis Range has opened the new Nevis Red route which shares the gondola uplift with the famous World Cup downhill track, bringing the Aonach Mor downhill experience to a much wider range of cross country mountain bike riders.
The gondola will take riders from the Nevis Range car park to 650m up the Aonach Mor mountain, where the new 5.5km route begins. It drops from 543m to 100m above sea level and is described as a ‘classic cross country style route’, despite having no climbs to speak of. Graded red by the Forestry Commissions grading structure, there’s a wide variety of surface type including metre wide boardwalk, natural rock, and gravel, with some black sections.
Marian Austin, MD of Nevis Range says: “This new trail is an integral part of our plan to grow the business. Opened almost 20 years ago, initially as a winter snowsports resort, Nevis Range has visitors all year round who use the mountain gondola to access the slopes of Aonach Mor not only for biking, skiing, snowboarding and climbing but also to enjoy the stunning Highland scenery and gentle walks.”
To give you some idea of what the new trail is like, here’s some helmetcam footage off of that YouTube:
