New trails for Angus?

From most perspectives, it’s easy to perceive Scotland as being packed to whatever countries have in place of gunwhales with all-weather, purpose-built singletrack centres. But, as anyone who’s ever driven north of Glasgow will have noticed, it’s a big place, and the vast majority of the trail centres are concentrated across the bottom bit of it where it joins on to England.

There are, of course, notable exceptions, and now Angus Council is looking to get in on the act with an MTB centre on Scotland’s east coast. To that end, said Council’s splendidly-named Community Learning and Development Outdoor Education Team is hosting a series of discussion evenings during April to explore the viability of a 7Stanes-style trail development in the region.

If there is sufficient support then the next step would be to form a group to take the project forwards, with the ongoing support of the outdoor education team. As a community project the proposed group would take responsibility for the key tasks involved in developing the trails. These would include location, trail design, and finding funding sources. Throughout this process the outdoor education team is “committed to supporting the group’s work toward achieving the goal of an East Coast mountain bike trail development”. The goal is a trail development that would be both a resource for locals and an attraction for visitors.

The discussion dates are:

  • Monday 16 April: Panmure Centre, Community Learning and Development Service, 141 Kinloch Street, Carnoustie (7.30-8.30pm)
  • Wednesday 18 April: Fairlie House, Community Learning and Development Service, Kirkton Hill, Kirriemuir (7.30-8.30pm)
  • Thursday 19 April: Bruce House, Wellgate, Arbroath (7.30-8.30pm)
  • Monday 23 April: Pitstop, 1A Academy Street, Forfar (8-9pm)
  • Tuesday 24 April: Damacre Centre, Community Learning and Development Service, 26 Damacre Road, Brechin (7.30-8.30pm)
