Greg Minnaar has won the 2013 Downhill World Championships on a fast and fitness-essential course on home soil in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Minnaar won by less than a second from a sorely disappointed Mick Hannah from Australia. Possibly the most notable result of the day goes to Australia’s Jared Graves who took the bronze medal on a 26″ wheeled Yeti 66. The course was physical, flat and fast but no one can doubt the incredible skill it would have taken to handle anything less than a downhill bike at the highest speeds of any international race course. The UK’s Matt Simmonds also put in a stormer, finishing in fifth.
In the women’s category the UK’s Rachel Atherton took a huge win from French Emmeline Ragot and Australia’s Tracey Hannah, sister to Mick. Atherton finished with an eight-second margin of victory and showed her all-round prowess.
