Lovatt From Stephens in Cotswolds

Ecclesiastical Tour of the Cotswolds, UCI 1.5, Gloucester, Sunday 30th July
2000

Mark Lovatt secured his best win of the year and threw down
the gauntlet to

the riders chasing the Premier Calendar title, by winning the 119 miles

(190km) Ecclesiastical Tour of the Cotswolds on Sunday. It was Lovatt’s

second Premier win of a very consistent season for the 28 year old from Leek

in Staffordshire.

A three-man break of Lovatt, Matt Stephens and David McCann made the

significant move as the tough course began to take its toll. McCann trailed

off in the closing miles but Stephens and Lovatt were able to drive

themselves to the line where Lovatt had enough to squeeze out Stephens in a

battle of two non-sprinters.

Julian Winn’s 15th place has enabled him to leapfrog the absent Jon Clay at

the head of the Premier Calendar table. With leading contenders Clay, John

Tanner and Chris Newton likely to miss some or all of the remaining events

in the series, due to Olympic commitments, the Premier Calendar looks like a

straight head-to-head battle between Winn and Lovatt over the four remaining

events
