Costa Rica’s La Ruta de los Conquistadores claims to be the toughest mountain bike race in the world, and with 300 miles and 30,000ft of climbing through jungles and up volcanoes over three days, the organisers may have a point.
The start is on November 3, and you’d better be quick if you’re planning on taking part. The organisers have issued a warning that there’s just 49 places left – that means that 200 riders have already signed up. As daunting as the challenge sounds, there’s a prize pot worth a healthy $10,000, to be split across the five categories.
And you’ll be in good company – Thomas Frischknecht has signed up, as has MTB pioneer Tom Ritchey.
To register in La Ruta de los Conquistadores, challengers must fill up the on line form at www.adventurerace.com. Full course details are also on the site, so you can see what you’re letting yourself in for.
