As events that combine running and MTBing gain popularity, the inaugural iROC event aims to offer a new challenge, with competitors required to bike, run and orienteer in six individual races over the weekend of 18-19 April 2009.
The six events take place in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Weardale Valley, Pennines, with an area of private land in Weardale Quarry reserved for the event. All but one of the races will have a mass start and will pass back through the event centre at least once before finishing.
Run over the course of the weekend, there will be a choice of events, including a night time MTB time trial and a 4-hour enduro, as well as two fell/trail races and two orienteering races. To be in with a chance of winning some of the £2,000 price pot you’ll need to partake in each and every event, which sounds a rather daunting prospect to us non-runners.
Organisers promise a simple charging structure that will include race entry, camping, parking and access to the Saturday night entertainment. You can choose to race as an individual, pair or as a team of three. If you enter as a team or pair your individual scores in each race will be added together to create an overall team/pair score.
As well as entering solo, there’s also a pairs category that allows competitors to share the events, so you can compete each one separately if you desire.
Night MTB Time Trial – 9pm Saturday 18 April
Riders will be randomly assigned a start time and will then start in blocks of two to three riders at 1min intervals. A fully marked course that should boast some technical singletrack, fast descents and challenging ascents.
MTB Enduro – 10:30am Sunday 19 April
The final event of the weekend is the 4-hour enduro, with the most laps completed bagging first prize. If you complete a lap just before the four hour mark you must start another lap. You cannot start another lap after four hours.
