David Millar (Cofidis) has won today’s stage of the Vuelta, beating Santiago Botero (Kelme) in a 2 up sprint on the track at Torrallevega. Millar was back in the thick of things after a disappointing day yesterday when, at the bottom of the final 16km climb up to the finish, he attacked the 7 man breakaway group he was in. Botero followed and the pair worked well to get a gap of nearly a minute over the peloton, who had by now swallowed up the rest of the breakaway.
Millar’s performance must bode well for tomorrow’s 44km time trial, a discipline at which he excels, as was shown by his prologue win on Saturday.
