Black Mountains Three-Day course info

Day two route profile – 2300m of climbing
Day three route profile – 1800m of ascent

Entries are coming in thick and fast for the Bearded Man Black Mountains Three-Day event on July 1-3 in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The weekend kicks off with a Friday evening time trial around the Glanusk Estate, with the 13km course featuring steep climbs and swoopy singletrack through the woodland.

Saturday’s 72km ride, with 2300m of climbing, starts at Mynydd Forest, with a route which includes some super-fast descents and challenging ascents, traversing the valley walls before reaching the north west corner of Mynydd, where the forest makes way for natural trails.

Undulating terrain meanders towards Llanbedr, with multiple line choices, hidden ruts and lightning-quick sections to test your bravery. The final kilometre features a steep descent through woodland to a small farm road which will lead you to the day’s feed station, with energy goodies from sponsors Torq.

The Grwyne Fawr black route swithces towards Mynydd Llysiau, with lots of climbing followed by the descent towards Pengenfford; initially steep, rocky and technicalbefore you find yourself traversing the hillside on vague sheep track and crossing the road at Pengenfford to head for Mynydd Llangorse.

The ascent of Mynydd Llangorse is a major climb that is likely to see everyone off and shouldering their bikes. Take some time to soak up the scenery and your accomplishment before rolling into the fast and fun descent before enjoying the final few kilometres spinning on easy trails to Glansuk.

Sunday’s 68km finale, with 1800m of ascent, begins with a short trail section within the Glanusk Estate, before riders make their way towards Talybont-on-Usk, and its fast forest riding, technical rocky ascents and descents, and gate lifts that either provide some respite or add additional stress on tired limbs.  The old Roman Road then leads to the day’s main objective – the Gap.

You’ll be able to top up your energy levels at the day’s feed station before hitting the bumpy, stony trail that takes you up to the Gap. The elements play a major role in making the Gap a fun ride, with wind and rain funnelling through the ravine making it a really exciting place when the weather gods aren’t playing.

The roll into the finish line is undemanding and will make a great opportunity to share your experiences of the three-day challenge with your fellow riders before enjoying a celebratory beer at the ride’s end.
