Mountain bike advocacy organisation IMBA-UK is campaigning for greater access to rural coastlines for mountain bikes. Despite having a very large amount of coastline, England has only 50km of coastal bridleway, 16km of which is across Morecambe Bay and under water at high tide. Wales has a mere 18km of bridleways along its coasts, mostly on the Gower peninsula. All of which is a real shame – coastal riding is something a bit special.
According to IMBA-UK, the government is considering following up the recent Right to Roam legislation with increased access to the coastline for walkers. The MTB organisation is pushing for mountain bikers to be considered in any new legislation and is encouraging riders to write to the minister concerned, Jim Knight MP, to make themselves heard.
