UCI World Cup DH3 – Willingen, Germany

The British DH contingent may not have pulled off the double at the home round of Fort William last weekend, but they made up for it at the strangely similarly-named Willingen round.

Tracy Moseley’s making a habit of topping the podium this year, and Willingen made it three out of three. It was a tight one, though, with Moseley only 0.28s ahead of Sabrina Jonnier. The two of them were a cut above the field, with Rachel Atherton being best of the rest. Fionn Griffiths took fifth, putting three British riders on the podium. And Helen Gaskell got inside the top ten, too.

So it was Moseley/Jonnier/Atherton on the day and it’s Moseley/Jonnier/Atherton at the top of the overall standings. Moseley’s three wins have given her a 143 point buffer at the series half-way point.

In the men’s race, Steve Peat made up for his Fort William disappointment by coming in over a second clear of defending World Cup Champion Greg Minnaar. Gee Atherton was third, just 0.08 seconds behind the South African. Peat’s team-mate Nathan Rennie was the final member of the exclusive under-two-minute club in fourth, while Chris Kovarik finished off the podium.

He might have only won one race so far, but with some quite erratic performances from many riders, his three podium placings have put Steve Peat at the top of the leader board, a healthy 132 points clear of Minnaar. For the next round in three week’s time, the World Cup circus crosses the Atlantic to visit Mont Ste Anne, Canada.
