Tour de France Week One Roundup

Fabian Cancellara won the Prologue in London

The Tour de France got off to a thumping start in London last weekend. With the Prologue around central London and the first stage run through Kent and finishing in Canterbury, British supporters were out in force in their millions to cheer on the riders.

With Fabian Cancellara, the current World Time Trial Champion winning the Prologue by a whopping 8 seconds, he slipped on the yellow jersey and has kept it for the entire first week. He’s still wearing it heading into the sixth stage today, but we expect matters will change when the race heads into the Alps on Saturday.

For the Brits, it’s been a good, if quiet, race so far. David Millar and Bradley Wiggins didn’t quite manage to make the impact they had hoped for in the Prologue, but Millar provided some compensation by breaking away on stage one, picking up the Polka Dot jersey on the way. We saw him attacking in the final kilometres of yesterdays run into Autun, the Scot clearly finding his form coming to him.

For Mark Cavendish it’s been a nightmarish start, with two crashes, one on stage one where many hoped he would contend the sprint finish in Canterbury, and again on stage two when over 20 riders crashed near the finish in Ghent. A ninth place finish on stage three signals he’s bounced back though, and we can perhaps hope for something from him in today’s flattish stage to Bourg-En-Bresse.
