Red Bull Downtown

Steve Peat and smart motor

The international race season hasn’t even really begun yet, and already World Cup champ Steve Peat is on a roll. This weekend he won the Red Bull Downtown race in Lisbon for the second consecutive year, beating Brian Lopes by just one second. Spaniard Tomas Misser took third.

More good news for the Brits in the women’s race, with Tracy Moseley in third place behind Anne Caroline Chausson, who was beaten into second by Marielle Saner.

Tracy Moseley takes it one step at a time

As you might expect from Red Bull, the Downtown race is a little out of the ordinary. The course is set right in the centre of Lisbon, with 1,300 metres of tram tracks, cobblestones and 200 steps to negotiate. Oh, and the odd parked car…

According to a press release from Red Bull, Steve Peat commented: “Downtown is a great event – I love the tight little streets and windy steps. On the first descent it was hard to find my rhythm and Lopes was going much faster – I realised I had to concentrate if I was to catch up with his speed. However, after a hard victory, I’m very happy to take the title back to the UK”. Which however hard we try just doesn’t sound a great deal like the sort of thing that Steve would say. Still, we’re sure the sentiments ring true…
